Negotiating Contracts
Most companies now have written employment contracts that stipulate the basic terms and conditions of employment.
Most of these will have been discussed during the interview process. The contract just confirms these in writing.
Remember it is in your interest to have a mutual, shared understanding of what is expected by both parties.
Do
- Know what you are prepared and not prepared to negotiate on
- Be open and transparent about what your company is offering
- Confirm what has previously been discussed at interview
- Follow-up with the contract promptly
- Keep it simple and understandable
- Allow new starter time to reflect and get back to you
Don't
- Give any surprises
- Get into a win/lose contest
- Get too legalistic (even though you may have sought legal counsel)
- Be unrealistic
- Promise things you can’t/won’t deliver on
- Take too long
If in doubt seek legal counsel or, if your company is a member of Employers Associations,
