Informing successful and unsuccessful candidates
Congratulations! You now have the right person for the job so be prompt in telling them before they go somewhere else.
Giving feedback to all interviewees sets you apart as an organisation to work for. Some of the best free PR you can get!
Feedback to successful interviewee
- Always via the telephone
- Explain why they got the job
- Confirm start date, salary and any other relevant information
- Confirm their acceptance
- Follow-up with written contract promptly
Feedback to unsuccessful interviewees
- Always via the telephone
- Explain why they did not get the job with meaningful feedback about their interview performance.
Include what they did well in the interview and where they could improve
- Don’t give meaningless reasons e.g. "over qualified, people with more experience" etc.
- Don’t make statements about keeping their applications on file (can be against privacy laws)
- Do say you would welcome further applications from them – but only if you would
